After a flight from Kuala Lumpur, we arrive in Medan, the bustling capital of North Sumatra. While there isn’t much to see in the city itself, it serves as our starting point for this epic adventure. We spend the night in Medan, preparing ourselves for the excitement that lies ahead. 🌆🌙💤
Day 2: From Medan to Berastagi – Exploring Old Villages 🚌🏰
We kick off our journey by hopping on a bus from Medan to Berastagi. The bus company, conveniently located on the side of the road, offers a budget-friendly option for travel. For just £15, both of us embark on this scenic ride. Upon reaching Berastagi, we’re captivated by the nearby old village, where traditional houses take us on a journey back in time. We settle down for the night, eagerly anticipating the next day’s adventures. 🚍🌾🏡
Day 3: Conquering Volcanic Heights in Berastagi 🌋🌫️
With a spirit of adventure, we set off to climb a volcano in Berastagi, hoping to witness breathtaking views from its summit. However, Mother Nature has her own plans, and mist blankets the landscape, obscuring our view. Nevertheless, we embrace the mysterious atmosphere and explore the town, immersing ourselves in the local culture and savoring the delightful cuisine. 🥾🌁🍽️
Day 4: From Berastagi to Ketambe – The Journey Begins 🚐🌳
Our journey continues as we travel from Berastagi to Ketambe via Lai Packham. Along the way, we encounter a friendly police officer who adds a touch of warmth to our trip. A small van takes us to Ketambe, our basecamp for thrilling jungle treks. As night falls, we settle into Ketambe, excited for the upcoming adventures in search of orangutans. 🚐🌲🌃
Day 5-7: Jungle Trekking in Ketambe – In Search of Orangutans 🌳🐵🌿
The next three days are dedicated to immersive jungle trekking experiences in Ketambe. Guided by experienced locals, we venture deep into the lush rainforests, traversing rugged terrains and crossing rivers. Our primary goal? To spot the magnificent orangutans in their natural habitat. Leaving Ketambe behind, we embark on a journey to the tranquil paradise of Lake Toba. While public transport proves challenging for a one-day trip, we opt for a shared taxi service or arrange a private driver through our guesthouse. Finally, we reach the shores of Lake Toba, a massive volcanic lake enveloped by verdant landscapes. We catch a ferry to the enchanting island of Samosir and settle in for the night, ready to explore this idyllic destination. 🚕🏝️🌅
